3 Red Flags When Hiring New Clients

We've all been there…

You’re eagerly awaiting a new client, only to realize that the client is a complete nightmare.

You know the type - they haggle over the price until you're practically working for peanuts. Or they expect you to be available at their beck and call. Or worst of all, they micromanage every little thing you do.

These clients can suck the joy out of what you do, and completely waste all your energy.

Today, we're going to cover the 3 biggest red flags to look out for when bringing on new clients.

#1 - Constant Negotiation

The first red flag is when the client argues about price too much.

Look, we get it - everyone wants a good deal. But there comes a point where the haggling becomes unreasonable.

They want you to work for a fraction of what you're worth, and they'll try every tactic in the book to get you to lower your price. They'll tell you that they have a tight budget, or they'll try to guilt-trip you by telling you that they're a small business just starting out.

It’s okay to be understanding, but you also have to know your worth and be firm in your pricing. If a client is not willing to pay what you're worth, then it's probably not a good fit.

Don't be afraid to walk away from a potential client if they're not willing to meet your pricing requirements.

#2 - 24/7 Expectations

The second red flag is when the client expects you to be constantly available.

We've all had that client who sends emails at all hours of the day and night, or who calls us on weekends or holidays. While it's important to be responsive to client needs, it's also important to set boundaries.

You are not a 24/7 service, and it's important to communicate that to your clients.

If you want to be a 24/7 service - then you can raise your prices!

If a potential client is already demanding too much of your time before you've even started working with them, it's a red flag that they will continue to do so. Don't be afraid to set boundaries with clients and let them know when you are available to communicate.

#3 - Micromanagers

The third red flag is when the client wants to micromanage every aspect of your work. We've all had that client who wants to see every draft, every edit, and every change before it's even complete.

Of course, you need to take client feedback into consideration. But it's also important to have the freedom to do your job without someone breathing down your neck.

If a potential client is already displaying signs of micromanagement before you've even started working with them, they’re absolutely going to keep doing that as you work with them.

Keep these 3 red flags in mind as you start looking for new clients. Nothing will zap your energy and motivation faster than working for a nightmare client.

You DESERVE to work with clients who respect your expertise and value your time!
