Email Segmenting 101 - 3 Tips To Use ASAP

If you do any email marketing at all, you may have heard of “segmenting” your list.

Email segmenting is the process of categorizing email contacts into different groups based on different criteria.

By doing this, you place customers who share the same characteristics in one group. There are tons of ways to segment your contacts whether it be by customer interest, location, purchase history, customer type, and more.

When you do this, your email campaigns become much more PERSONALIZED. That boosts engagement and sales.

Today, we’re going to show you 3 tips for effective email segmenting.

Let’s get right to it!

#1 - Segment By “Non-Clickers”

The best (and easiest) place to start segmenting your email list is to look at the data from the emails you’ve been sending out to find users who opened, but didn’t click.

Almost every single email sender will have this data for you to see.

You clearly captured enough of their interest to get them to open your email, but since they didn’t click the link, then you must’ve gone wrong somewhere in the email copy.

Start examining your copy and offer to see what can be changed to make it more appealing.

Now you can email this list again and really increase their interest in your product or business.

#2 - Segment By “Un-Openers”

Next, pull out the people who didn’t open your email at all.

The people in this group are another HUGE untapped resource for your business.

It’s entirely possible those in this list like your content, but were on vacation, at work, or otherwise distracted and never got around to your email.

For those people, you could try emailing them at different times. For others, you may want to start by playing around with your subject lines to see if you can entice more of them to click your emails.

#3 - Segment By “Clickers”

Next, turn to those people on your list who have opened your email and clicked through to your product or site.

This is a GREAT group. You’ve already gotten their attention that they actually clicked through to your offer.

For this list, you want to start thinking about why they clicked and whether or not they actually ended up taking the desired action on the next page.

Now, your primary goal is to continue optimizing your emails further to get them to continue clicking through and taking the desired action on the following page.

There you have it!
